He runs, he scores and he smiles.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has never really walked. From his first steps on Catalan soil, where his father played football long before him, to the supersonic sprints that have shaken the nets across Europe, ‘Auba’ has always had that rare gift: the ability to make time his ally and space his playground.
Born in Laval, forged by a family of footballers and a demanding Gabonese international father, Pierre-Emerick grew up following a destiny that seemed all mapped out. But unlike so many others, he wasn't content to follow the lines: he broke them.
After starting out at AC Milan, then loan spells in France (Dijon, Lille, Monaco) until his breakthrough at Saint-Étienne, the young striker honed his art: pure speed, incisive runs and clinical finishing. At Dortmund, he scored goals like pearls for five seasons. The adventure continued for four years at Arsenal, then at FC Barcelona, always with the same success.
From Chelsea, he signed for Marseille, where, after a normal period of adjustment, his talent exploded one autumn evening against Ajax. ‘I came here to thrill,’ he said at his first press conference, with an almost boyish smile. The fans were not disappointed. He scored a hat-trick against the Dutch side and, as winter approached, ‘PEA’ warmed up the Orange Vélodrome with his goals, acrobatic celebrations and insatiable desire. The 34-year-old became the spearhead of an explosive Marseille attack, playing at its heart.
He scored twice against Montpellier, Nantes and Lorient, and lit up Europe, notably during a memorable evening against Villarreal. He ended the 2023-2024 season with 30 goals in all competitions. This was unheard of at OM since Didier Drogba 20 years earlier. The demanding Marseille fans now worship him. The ‘old lion’ still roars.
After a season in Saudi Arabia, during which he found the back of the net 21 times in 36 games, the Gabonese international's slender silhouette is back in Marseille.
At 36, he still has the fire to bring stadiums to their feet. Above all, he has a deep desire to play, to feel the excitement, to give his all.
In Marseille, he has found more than a club: he has found a stage worthy of his talent.
Welcome, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang!
