This will be the third time that OM and Paris SG have faced each other in the Champions Trophy. The first time was in July 2010 in Tunisia, when OM won on penalties (0-0, 5-4 on penalties). The second time was on 13 January 2021 behind closed doors at the Félix-Bollaert stadium in Paris, when Paris beat OM 2-1.

OM has won the Trophée des Champions twice in its current format, in 2010 against PSG and in 2011 against Lille. The Marseille club also won the predecessor to the Trophée des Champions, the Challenge des Champions, in 1971 against Rennes. At the end of regulation time, the score was 2-2. As the pitch was invaded by spectators, the penalty shootout could not take place and the winner was decided by a draw.
