With 18 points through 9 matchdays in Ligue 1 Uber Eats, OM are off to the third best start out of its last 10 seasons.

Olympique de Marseille sits in fourth position in the league table with 18 points and within touch of second place with one game in-hand. OM's ranking in L1 at the time last season is encouraging and promising. In the league, les Marseillais have lost only one game and are part of a trio, along with Lille and Lyon, of teams with the fewest defeats. And with an average of 2 points per game, André Villas-Boas’s men are off to one of their best starts to the season.

It is indeed the third best start, after nine matchdays, of the last 10 years. Les Olympiens have only done better twice:

  • In 2012-2013, they won 1 more point at the same stage of the competition with the same number of goals scored and conceded. That season, after 9 matchdays, OM were tied for second on points with leaders PSG. Under the leadership of Elie Baup, they finished the season in second place (71 points, 21-8-9), 12 points behind the champions and 4 ahead of third-placed OL.
  • In 2014-2015, after nine matchdays, OM were the solid leader in the championship with 22 points (4 more than this season). The team coached by Marcelo Bielsa had 7 wins, a draw and a loss. It had finished the first leg in first place but was unable to follow up with such performances and finished the league in fourth place.

The figures and recent trends clearly show that the league season is a marathon, that a good final position is won over time and that, even if a team starts badly, it can finish well, and vice versa. performance is the key to success.

Indeed, while the points figures after nine matchdays over the past 10 years are promising, other data shows that progress is still possible and even desirable to improve upon one's achievements. In attack, for example, with 12 goals scored, OM's 2020-2021 team has only placed seventh in the last 10 years. While on the defensive side, with just 8 goals conceded, this season’s team is the second best defense in the last 10 years.

Compared to Last Season

The 2019-2020 season is probably the best season to compare the numbers after nine matchdays. The manager is the same and the squad is essentially the same. Compared to the previous season, Les Olympiens are better in some categories and not improved in others. Indeed, in 2020-21, OM won more games (5 against 3), secured fewer draws (3 against 4) and lost less (1 against 2). OM therefore logically have more points than last season (18 against 13). OM also scored more goals (12 against 10) and conceded fewer (8 against 11).

The challenge ahead of our Olympiens now is finding a way to keep these results and performances running through May 2021.
