Olympique de Marseille suffered elimination from the UEFA Europa League on Thursday evening as the team went down 2-1 to SS Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

The 2018 finalists were already in need of three points after defeats to Eintracht Frankfurt and Lazio, and the team started very well in Italy to overturn a poor run of recent form.

In an unorthodox 3-5-2 formation, OM hit the road very quickly with Clinton Njie and Florian Thauvin troubling Thomas Strakosha in the early stages.

An equal first half it seemed before the Italian side hit the break with seconds to go before the half-time whistle. Marco Parolo jumped first to a header past Pele to put his side ahead.

The hosts got a second soon after the break through Angel Correa, but OM did not take it lying down. Florian Thauvin reduced arrears before Kevin Strootman and Njie also went painfully close.

At the other end, Pele registered several top marks to keep OM within a fighting chance, but in the end, the three points went to Lazio.

OM can no longer mathematically qualify for the last 32. Attention now turns to the home game against Dijon on Sunday.
