Olympique de Marseille were eliminated from the Coupe de la Ligue at the last 16 stage after a 4-2 defeat on penalties that followed a 1-1 draw against RC Strasbourg on Wednesday.

OM, who lost at this stage on penalties last season, were 1-0 down via a Jonas Martin penalty in the 18th minute following an alleged handball.

But that was only after a heavily dominating spell from the hosts who began the match in strong form against Thierry Laurey’s side, but had little to show for it.

The second half was more enterprising for Rudi Garcia’s men who despite their efforts could not trouble Bingourou Kamara.

OM were afforded a penalty after Martin cynically brought down Maxime Lopez, but Dimitri Payet saw his spot-kick saved.

The additions of Kostas Mitroglou and Clinton Njie added impetus for the side, who were eventually rewarded with an 80th minute equaliser through Luiz Gustavo.

Onwards to penalties after a 90 minute stalemate. Strasbourg converted all 4 of their penalties, while Payet and Rami’s misses saw OM exit the competition.
