Marseille secured their first Europa League win of the season at home to Lokomotiv Moscow thanks to a goal from Milik. OM will play in the Europa Conference League play-offs in February.

The olympien XI

Jorge Sampaoli continued to rotate his squad at the end of 2021. Compared to the last game played on Saturday at the Orange Velodrome against Brest (1-2), the Argentine coach made 5 changes: Mandanda, Balerdi, Gueye, Ünder and Milik replaced Lopez, Alvaro, Kamara, Harit and Payet.
The captain's armband was worn by goalkeeper, Steve Mandanda.
OM's line-up: Mandanda, Saliba, Balerdi, Peres, Rongier, Guendouzi, Gueye, Gerson, Ünder, Milik and de la Fuente.

Milik Delivers

Possession was largely in OM's favour in the first half but their attempts were not sharp enough. A shot from Gerson went wide, a free kick from Ünder went past the goal without anyone receiving it (Balerdi threw himself in but was a few centimetres short) and a swivel shot from Milik was caught by the 'keeper.
As is often the case, it was from set-pieces that the difference was made. A corner from Ünder landed on the head of Milik, who had broken away from the Moscow mark to beat Khudiakov, and it was OM who took advantage of their domination (35').

OM Leads into break

Marseille had several chances to double their lead, notably through Gerson's header (51') or after a good through-ball from Milik (52'). The most clear-cut opportunity came after a fine team move.
The ball came to the feet of Ünder, who was running at full speed. The Turk slipped the ball through to Gerson, who found himself alone in front of the Russian 'keeper. The Brazilian's shot was blocked by Khudiakov, the ball went toward the goal but ended up on the crossbar.

Les Olympiens Finish with 10

Valentin Rongier received a first caution in the 63rd minute of the match and a second one with 10 minutes left in regulation. The Marseille midfielder was sent off, leaving his team-mates outnumbered for the rest of the match.

OM Lands in the Europa Conference League

OM finished third in Group E of the Europa League and have been relegated to the Europa Conference League, a competition created this season by UEFA. The Olympiens will therefore play a play-off on 17 February (first leg) and 24 February (second leg) against one of the Conference League group runners-up. OM will know their opponent on Monday, 13 December, as the draw will take place at 2 pm in Nyon at the European body's headquarters.
