Olympique de Marseille suffered a 1-3 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in a heated Classique at the Parc des Princes on Sunday evening.

Both sides came into the game in strong domestic form, with OM picking up five wins out of the last six. The onus was on the visitors to try and close the gap to Lyon in 3rd place.

And the visitors started strongly in the capital as Mario Balotelli saw a good effort denied by Alphonse Areola, while at the other end Thomas Meunier saw Mandanda perform a great two-handed save.

PSG were hurt by the two withdrawals of Meunier and Dani Alves in the first half, but they struck right at the end of the period. From an OM corner, the hosts broke on the counter through Di Maria who found Mbappe, who in turn slotted under Mandanda.

OM however had the perfect response. After 25 seconds of the second half, Germain raced forward to collect a pass from Ocampos to glide the ball under Thiago Silva and Areola for 1-1.

PSG hit back soon after as Di Maria broke free to curl past Mandanda. Despite OM in a good position, a red card for Steve Mandanda for handling outside the area swung the game in the hosts’ favour.

In the aftermath, Balotelli was substituted for Yohann Pele, with the latter seeing Di Maria strike a free-kick for his first action of the game.

It could’ve been more late on, but Pele made amends in saving Kylian Mbappe’s stoppage time penalty. OM remain 4th in Ligue 1, 6 points behind Lyon heading into the international break.
