L-Acoustics becomes a partner of Orange Velodrome.

Unforgettable fan experiences are an integral part of OM’s (Olympique de Marseille) rich 120-year history. The club’s commitment to providing an ideally suited environment to channeling supporter enthusiasm and energy to the team has led OM to commission a series of technical renovations at Orange Vélodrome.

Seeking to deploy a sound system which involves fans in every moment of the action on game day, OM naturally turned to French company L-Acoustics, the world leader in premium professional sound systems for live events.

Official OM Announcer since 1986, André Fournel has experienced a succession of various sound systems at Orange Vélodrome over the years. “It’s an exceptional place, mythical even,” he declares. “The atmosphere is exceptional as well because Marseille fans know how to create ambiance on the evening of a match. It was important to have quality sound which contributes to the listening comfort of our supporters, gives them the opportunity to participate and react to announcements and, above all, fully enjoy the key moment when players enter the field for the introduction of the match lineup, accompanied by Van Halen’s ‘Jump’.”

The installation, designed specifically for the stadium, was modeled using L-Acoustics Soundvision, a powerful digital acoustic and mechanical 3D simulation tool. Soundvision enables analysis of the stadium's sound coverage, working from a virtual representation of the site. The software facilitates optimization of the location, angles, and settings of speakers to ensure uniform and consistent sound coverage for everyone. As a result, every fan in the venue benefits from an incomparable sonic environment and participates fully in the match atmosphere.

A sound system comprising 300 loudspeakers and 51 amplifiers ensures uniform coverage of all areas. This solution was installed by technical integration company SNEF in consultation with the AV design and consulting firm Atelier Audiovisuel. L-Acoustics sound systems control and direct sound waves with laser-like precision, providing high intelligibility and minimizing the listening fatigue that can result from a less sophisticated sound system. The technology pioneered by L-Acoustics, known as WST (Wavefront Sculpture Technology), has become the worldwide industry standard for large scale events.

L-Acoustics K2 loudspeakers, a frequent choice of world-class music festivals, artists on tour, and the opening and closing ceremonies of global sports gatherings, serve as the backbone of the installation at Orange Vélodrome. K2 provides the highest sound pressure (SPL) per weight in the pro sound industry combined with exceptional throw.

These characteristics allow for flexible integration of K2 in atypical and original architectural structures such as the

Orange Vélodrome stadium where the stunning undulation of the stadium roof geometry results in variable height with respect to spectators, requiring particular attention to pinpoint optimal rigging points to suspend the 15 K2 line arrays.

In addition, compact 5XT speakers have been installed to discreetly refine sound coverage in every niche and corner of the stadium without obstructing the spectator’s view. 5XT offers the same clear and transparent sonic signature as K2, which contributes to a unified sound experience for all fans.
