Olympique de Marseille is proud to announce the arrival of Italian defender Emerson Palmieri from West Ham.

On the sunny streets of Santos, Brazil, a young boy with tousled hair kicked an old deflated ball with the carefree attitude of children and the enthusiasm of great destinies. Emerson Palmieri dos Santos was still just one kid among many, but football was not a game for him: it was his mother tongue.

Born in 1994, he grew up in the shadow of the beautiful game, inspired by the exploits of his elders. Very quickly, Santos FC, Pelé's legendary club, spotted this left-back with his inexhaustible stamina and refined technique. At just 17 years of age, Emerson was already playing in the Brazilian league. But his story, like so many others, took an unexpected turn.

Far from putting down roots, Emerson took flight. In 2014, Europe came calling. He set sail for Italy: first Palermo, then Roma, where he refined his game, gained discipline and impressed with his versatility. He became a valuable, discreet, but always ready player in the shadows. Italy embraced him so well that he chose to become a citizen. In 2018, he decided to wear the Azzurri jersey, a choice made as much with his heart as with his head.

What followed was an undeniable rise. Transferred to Chelsea, Emerson discovered England, its drizzly rain and frenetic pace. He won the Europa League in 2019 and the Champions League in 2021, then joined Lyon on loan. In France, he rediscovered a more Latin style of football. But it was with Italy that he reached for the stars: in 2021, during the Euro, he became European champion, a symbol of cultural and sporting diversity.

He returned to England in 2022. With West Ham, Emerson completed his collection of continental trophies with the Conference League. He became one of the few players to have lifted the Champions League, the Europa League, the Conference League and the Euro. An impressive track record for a man with an extraordinary career.

Brazilian in spirit, Italian at heart, European by adoption, Emerson Palmieri embodies what is most universal about football: travel, adaptation and passion.

Welcome to Marseille, Emerson!
