Gerónimo Rulli: ‘Giving a better version of myself’

Lessons from Real

Hello, everyone. The match against Real will serve us well. We were up against one of the best teams in the world and we rose to the occasion. That will help us for the next match, but also for the rest of the season.

The four-man defence

We normally play with four, but with the ball we play with two or three centre-backs to get the ball out. It doesn't change much for me. It depends on the phases of the match. We can play with several variations. The team is becoming more and more complete.

Instructions

We're always trying to improve. We need to be more fluid and want to play with the ball. We have more space when the opposition presses high, especially for those up front. We're constantly working on bringing the ball out. The new players need to adapt, and we need to get to know each other better to find our best form.

OM-PSG

It's different from last season. It won't be my first Classico. We realise the importance of this match, it's special, the whole of France is watching. These are the two best teams in France. We're preparing for it with a lot of enthusiasm.

His performance in Madrid

I was personally happy with my game but I was disappointed with the end. It would have been a great evening if we had taken a point. We have to keep moving forward. We played a great match, we suffered but we were able to play our game. It was the first Champions League match for many players. It was a learning experience.

Rennes-OM

When you lose two colleagues, you're not happy. That's in the past. The players have found a new destination, they are good people. New players have arrived and we have to move on. We have to look ahead.

I never thought about leaving. That's a lie.

The start of the season

My personal goal is to be a better version of myself than last season. I work every day to help the team, achieve our collective goals and, why not, win a trophy.

Mason Greenwood

Our goal this season is to be more consistent, not just against the big teams but against everyone. We want to win every game. It's fundamental; we have to look up. Last season, our mentality made us doubt ourselves at times, and we mustn't repeat that this year.

The gap with PSG

We're up against the best PSG team in history. They won almost everything last year. We aspire to beat them. They're moving forward, they're continuing to move forward, it's complicated for us, but the club's ambition is the same: to fight with them, to go for a little more. There's a gap between us and them, but I'd like to fight with them until the end.

His best match at Real?

I prepare the same way for every match. I try not to leave anything to chance, to stay calm. I work the same way before every match. It was a Champions League match in a big stadium, but I didn't do anything different. I'm happy, people like me a lot, and when I feel loved and respected, I think I show my level.

Ajax

It's difficult to explain. Sometimes it happens, you don't arrive at the best time at the club. I was also injured, which complicated things. A new coach had arrived. A lot had changed at Ajax at that time. I have no hard feelings towards Ajax. It's an incredible club. I'll be happy to see my former teammates again.

Roberto De Zerbi: ‘Great teams need more time’

Lessons from Real

I don't know if this defeat is encouraging. It's a defeat, we can't be happy. We can do better, show more courage, more clarity. We could have looked for more depth. We can't be happy. We are OM with great players. We can be happy when we win these kinds of matches. We have a lot of new players. We started our journey a year ago, and great teams need more time. The team's attitude, pride, desire to perform, to be a player, these are positive things.

Keeping a cool head or getting fired up

One doesn't have to be at odds with the other. You can be hot-blooded and still be clear-headed. One doesn't exclude the other. You can draw serenity from pride. You need both to move forward. If you just have ambition without serenity, you don't have the dream of winning in Madrid. If you just have serenity, go walk your dog.

The instructions

In Madrid, we weren't the same as we were against PSG last year. We have a strong team with strong and experienced players. The team must speak the same language and have the same mentality. We must improve in our play and our mentality. It's a journey, and I hope we get there as soon as possible.

Nayef Aguerd

We'll see tomorrow and the day after. We're following the necessary protocols. His health comes first, and then we'll see.

The basics of the game and Hamed Junior Traoré

The basics will be there. We can't keep changing seven or eight players all the time. We'll see about Kondogbia, who is an important player. We have solutions with Gomez, Vermeeren, Paixao, Aubameyang... Traoré got injured on Saturday after Lorient. He'll be out for a few weeks.

Players who don't dare to let go

It takes time for new things to become a habit, a mechanism. The players are committed to running and helping each other, but with the ball, the choices depend on the player. Having 11 players who think the same way slows down the game. Against Aston Villa, we were more natural in the way we let ourselves go, but now we've taken a step backwards.

Mason Greenwood

I expect him to become a complete player like the greatest players in Europe. I watched some matches yesterday, I saw Raphinia, he had incredible determination, he was pressing all the time. Mbappé was pressing everyone. I want to help Mason, I'd like him to become a 360° team player to help the team. You improve the team by improving the individual.

Areas for improvement

Good question. In Madrid, it was not to give Mbappé any space. We never suffered that type of action, but we were too spread out, so you run more because the players are too far apart. The defence and midfield lines were close together. We also mustn't concede goals like we did against Rennes.

Corners

We've improved our shooting. There's a better chance of scoring if the corner is well taken with Aubameyang in the box. I'd like Balerdi to get more involved in corners too. He can do good things from corners.
