Angel Gomes in Blue and White
He learned to kick a ball before he even knew how to walk. His first word: “ball.” Born in London on August 31, 2000, Adilson Angel Abreu de Almeida Gomes grew up in Manchester, in the Salford neighborhood, where he had a happy childhood driven by a single passion: football. Many remember him as that little boy who played in the street, honing his technique on the concrete before bringing it onto the pitch at Manchester United’s academy, which he joined at the age of 9.
Angel was immersed in a professional environment from a very young age, both at home and outside. The Red Devils’ academy was a true school of life, governed by written and unwritten rules that shaped young talents both technically and behaviorally. But Angel had an extra advantage: the example set within his own family. He grew up surrounded by professionalism, learning early on the path to follow, what to do or avoid, and how to progress, on and off the field. He drew inspiration from his father Gil Gomes, a former Angolan international, his brother Rico, who also came through the Manchester academy, and Nani, the former Portuguese international close to the family, who first gave advice to Rico, then to Angel.
Alongside Greenwood, whom he will soon reunite with as a teammate at OM, Angel climbed the ranks all the way to Manchester United’s first team. He made his debut at just 16 years and 263 days old at Old Trafford against Crystal Palace, becoming the youngest player to start a match for the Red Devils since Duncan Edwards in 1953, and the first player born after the year 2000 to set foot on a Premier League pitch.
His progression was steady, as shown by his regular call-ups to England’s youth teams, with whom he won major titles: the U17 World Cup and the U21 European Championship. He earned his first senior cap on September 7, 2024, against Ireland in the Nations League.
In the summer of 2020, Angel Gomes joined LOSC, who immediately loaned him to Boavista. A symbolic return to his roots, following in his father’s footsteps, who also played in Portugal, notably with Benfica and Braga. Angel felt at home there: he spoke the language, loved the atmosphere, the passion of the fans, and the climate. This positive energy allowed him to have an outstanding season: 32 matches, 6 goals, and 6 assists.
A quick, creative playmaker, and lethal one-on-one, he made his Ligue 1 debut with LOSC on August 21, 2021. He quickly became a key member of the squad, took part in European competitions, won the Coupe de France, and wrapped up his Lille adventure in the summer of 2025 with a total of 134 matches, 10 goals, and 19 assists.
