Today
OM player for five seasons between 2011 and 2016, Nicolas Nkoulou has announced that he is ending his distinguished career as a professional footballer.

By announcing the end of his professional career, Nicolas Nkoulou closes a long chapter in African and European football. An elegant and rigorous centre-back, the Cameroonian international leaves behind the image of a discreet but essential player, whose time at Olympique de Marseille remains one of the highlights of his career.

Arriving at La Canebière while still young, at the end of June 2011 at the age of 21, Nicolas Nkoulou quickly established himself as a reliable member of the Olympique defence. In a club often in search of defensive stability, he brought calm, game reading and consistency. His ability to anticipate, to restart cleanly and to win his duels made him an undisputed starter, regardless of the coach in charge. In Marseille, he also learned the particular demands of a club where every match is played under the burning gaze of the Orange Vélodrome.

In his first year at Marseille, he won the Coupe de la Ligue. Over the seasons, the Cameroonian international went beyond his status as a promising newcomer to become a key figure in the dressing room. He regularly wore the captain's armband, a symbol of the trust placed in him. Without unnecessary fanfare or sensational statements, he embodied a form of quiet leadership, respected by his teammates and recognised by the supporters. His consistency was a source of stability.

His time at OM was also marked by European campaigns, where the club regained some visibility on the continental stage, such as in 2011-12 when it reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
Nicolas Nkoulou gained valuable experience there, facing high-level opponents and strengthening his reputation as a reliable defender on the international stage. Marseille thus became a decisive springboard in his career, before he continued his journey with other clubs in France (Lyon) and Europe (Torino, Watford, Aris Thessaloniki, etc.). He left Marseille in 2016, five years after signing with OM. In the white jersey, he played 207 matches and scored a total of three goals.

The following season, while playing for Lyon, Nicolas Nkoulou won his biggest trophy. He lifted the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations with Cameroon, scoring a goal in the final.

Today, as he hangs up his boots, Nicolas Nkoulou leaves Marseille with the memory of an exemplary professional. Neither a flamboyant star nor a controversial figure, he was a solid player who respected the institution and was deeply committed to the game. At OM, he embodied valuable and reassuring defensive stability for several seasons, leaving a lasting mark on the memory of Marseille supporters.
