Trophée des Champions: The 2010 victory
Freshly crowned French champions, Didier Deschamps' Marseille side had one final match to play at the end of their preparations for the 2010-2011 season: a ‘friendly’ Champions Trophy final against Paris SG, winners of the 2009-2010 French Cup.
The match was held at the Stade du 7 Novembre in Radès, south of Tunis, in front of 57,000 spectators. The Olympians created chances in the first half, notably through Mamadou Samassa, but Parisian goalkeeper Grégory Coupet remained alert on his line. Just before half-time, Steve Mandanda made an excellent save at the feet of Nene to keep his goal intact.
In the second half, Hatem Ben Arfa came on in place of Mathieu Valbuena and energised the OM attack. He narrowly missed the target with a long-range shot. In the penalty area, Peguy Luyindula turned and shot, but his ball went well over the bar. OM's best chance came at the end of the match. From a PSG corner, Taye Taiwo tried his luck from outside the box, but the ball was deflected by Leyti N'Diaye and hit the Parisian post.
The match went to penalties. The first taker, Peguy Luyindula, hit the post, and the ball bounced off Steve Mandanda's back and went out. The Parisian striker was not as successful as Bruno Bellone against Brazil in 1982. Taye Taiwo and Hatem Ben Arfa scored their penalties. Lucho Gonzalez struck the ball hard down the middle, but Grégory Coupet had anticipated the shot and blocked the ball. Charles Kaboré and Guy Gnabouyou then scored their penalties. After the first five shooters, the score was 4-4.
The first shooter in sudden death was Ludovic Giuly. Steve Mandanda read the ball's trajectory perfectly and pushed it to his right. Edouard Cissé kept his cool, sent the ball into the back of the net and secured the title for his team.
At the start of the 2010-2011 season, OM, led by Didier Deschamps, lifted a third trophy after the 2010 championship and the 2010 League Cup.
